“Too Young To Wed” by Stephanie Sinclair gives us an inside view of child marriage around the world. Girls are subject to child marriage in more than 50 developing countries, and if it keeps on the way it has in the past, more than 100 million child girls will be wed in the next decade. Child marriage can lead to higher risk of complications and death during pregnancy (double the risk compared to women in their 20s to be exact) and almost always results in stopping the girl’s education, not to mention being taken from their homes and subject to abusive situations in many cases.

So basically, it’s a human rights issue, not a cultural one.

More info on child marriage can be found on the ICRW.
