Are current development initiatives focused on women and girls enough?
In a conversation with Owen Barder of the Center for Global Development, Andrea Cornwall of Sussex University and journalist Prue Clarke argue that current programs for women and girls are mostly “piecemeal interventions” that put women to work for development but don’t change fundamental gender relations.
On a higher level, this debate also raises the question, as Barder notes in the conversation, on what constitutes empowerment. How can the development community best push for it, especially in highly conservative societies, without coming across as invasive?
